Reviewed and updated: 5 November 2026. This article is a fact-check, not medical advice. We are not diagnosing anyone or commenting on anyone’s body. Every health-related statement below is credited to Matt Lucas himself or to the outlet that reported it. If we couldn’t trace a claim to a named, dated source, we say so.
Here is the short version. Matt Lucas has talked openly about losing weight, why he decided to and how he went about it. He has not publicly confirmed any medical diagnosis linked to his weight, any weight-loss medication or any surgery.
The most recent coverage we found comes from Hello! magazine in May 2026, which reported on Lucas receiving his OBE at Windsor Castle. The report says the honour was for services to drama. That piece also repeats several of his earlier comments: his father’s death at 52, gaining weight during the pandemic, loose skin, and a small amount of weight coming back. It also gives a figure of roughly 42kg lost. That number is Hello!’s reporting. We have not found it in a direct quote from Lucas.
What you can take from this:
- Confirmed by him: his reasons, the lifestyle changes he made, and that his weight has gone up and down.
- Reported by outlets: exact weight figures and what he weighs now.
- Not confirmed anywhere reliable: weight-loss drugs, surgery, or any illness behind the change.
Timeline of Matt Lucas’s public statements
Competitor pages tend to mix up when he said what. This timeline puts each statement next to the source it came from.
| Date | What was said or reported | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Childhood onward | Lucas has spoken often about losing his hair as a young child and living with alopecia. | His own interviews and his 2017 memoir, Little Me |
| 2017 | His memoir Little Me discusses how he looked as a child, his body image and his family life, including his relationship with his father. | Published memoir |
| 2020 | He joins The Great British Bake Off as co-host with Noel Fielding. | Channel 4 announcement and broadcast |
| September 2022 | On Gabby Logan’s The Mid.Point podcast, he says he gained weight during lockdown, that his father died at 52, and that he wanted to get healthier. He describes treating exercise as a game. | HuffPost UK; Hello! |
| March 2023 | He announces he is leaving Bake Off to focus on other work. Alison Hammond is later named as his replacement. | Public announcement and broadcaster confirmation |
| May 2026 | OBE investiture at Windsor Castle. Coverage reports a loss of around 42kg, loose skin, that he might consider surgery, and a regain of about 2kg. | Hello! |
One detail other pages get wrong: his 2022 comments about not taking drugs were about recreational drugs. They do not answer whether he has used weight-loss medication, and we found no interview where he confirms or denies that.
What has been publicly confirmed, and what hasn’t
Confirmed in his own words
- Why he did it: his father died at 52, and Lucas has said that made him think seriously about his own health as he got older.
- Lockdown weight gain: he has said he put weight on during the pandemic.
- How he did it: eating less, more walking, and making exercise feel like a game. He has described all of these himself.
- Loose skin and some regain: as reported in the May 2026 coverage.
Not confirmed
- Weight-loss drugs, including Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro: there is no confirmation or denial on record.
- Surgery: he has reportedly said he might think about it for loose skin. That is not the same as having had it.
- Any diagnosis behind the weight change: none has been confirmed.
- Named diet plans, pills or supplements: these appear on low-quality blogs with no attribution. Treat them as invented.
Why the weight figures don’t match
You will find very different numbers online. Hello! reports about 42kg, which is roughly 93lb or 6st 9lb. Some spam sites claim 127lb, which is about 58kg. Those figures can’t both be right, and the larger one has no named source. When a page gives a precise number with no quote, date or outlet, assume it has been made up or copied from somewhere else.
Some tabloid coverage has also framed his weight loss around “thin-shaming” and online comments about how he looks. We haven’t relied on that reporting here. We also don’t think anyone’s body is a fair subject for public comment, whichever way their weight has changed.
Confirmed condition or treatment
Lucas has not publicly confirmed any medical condition or treatment connected to his weight loss. What he has described is lifestyle change. No outlet we reviewed cites a doctor, a diagnosis or a prescription, and we won’t guess at one.
The one long-standing condition he talks about himself is alopecia. He lost his hair as a young child and has discussed it in interviews and in his memoir for years. It has nothing to do with his weight loss. We mention it only because it is the health detail he has been most open about.
A note on photos: you can’t tell how healthy someone is from a red-carpet picture. Weight changes for many reasons, including illness, medication, stress, grief and deliberate changes like the ones Lucas describes. Guessing from photos is how the false claims above get started.
Recovery and current work
“Recovery” isn’t the right word here, because no illness has been confirmed. Lucas has described a long-term change in his habits, not getting better from a condition, so we haven’t framed it as a recovery.
On work:
- He left Bake Off in 2023, saying he wanted to concentrate on other commitments.
- He received his OBE in May 2026, reportedly for services to drama. That recognises a career including Little Britain, Shooting Stars, Doctor Who, and stage and writing work.
- He is still working as a writer and performer. For current projects, check his verified social accounts or official announcements rather than aggregator sites.

How we checked this article
We only used statements credited to Lucas in named interviews, or reporting from established outlets with a date. Where a claim appears only on unattributed blogs, we’ve marked it as unconfirmed rather than repeating it. For comparison, see our similar fact-checks on Josie Gibson’s weight loss and health claims and on Dawn French’s family life.
